Polish DSO Tauron has launched dynamic pricing at eTAURON stations, making it possible to charge EVs in line with lower energy prices on the stock exchange.

TAURON, in a release, says the initiative marks a prelude to the introduction of intelligent charging systems in their operating areas.

The DSO says such solutions will need to be implemented quickly to avoid overloading power grids and ensure efficient use of available infrastructure.

Namely, the transition away from fossil fuels in favour of renewables, requires a change in habit, says the operator, necessitating an adjustment of energy consumption to fit the profile of its production. Key to this, they add, will be flexibility.

TAURON introduced a price list at the beginning of the year, in which rates differ according to the time of day and day of the week. At night, on weekends and on holidays, consumers can recharge their EVs at a lower rate at magenta stations.

According to TAURON, the introduction of stock exchange-influenced dynamic pricing is expected to make it lower.

Commenting in a release was Bartłomiej Wyczałkowski, president of TAURON Nowe Technologie:

“We want electromobility to be cheap and therefore more accessible. By implementing our group development strategy, an important element of which is the transition to ecological energy, we want to draw our customers’ attention to such times of day when using electricity can be most profitable for them.

“Therefore, we have created tools that, at a low cost of purchasing energy on the exchange, allow for a significant reduction in the price of a kilowatt-hour at eTAURON charging stations.”

TAURON’s dynamic pricing can be accessed via the eTAURON smartphone application.

If there is an oversupply of energy from renewable sources in the energy system, it will make it possible to reduce the rates per KWh at certain eTAURON stations.

Added Wyczałkowski: “As TAURON, we want to actively promote dynamic tariffs among our customers, because today this is the most effective way to relieve the energy system and use cheap energy.

“We understand that by changing their habits, the customer makes an effort to become a more flexible consumer, so they must benefit from it – in this case, we offer them access to cheaper electricity. We treat this as a way to learn how to use energy in the context of profound changes in the energy sector.”
